چکیده

We derive a new factorization formula in perturbative quantum chromodynamics for the Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair cross section as a function of the transverse momentum QT of the pair. When QT is much larger than the pair’s invariant mass Q, this factorization formula systematically resums the logarithmic contributions of the type αs ln (QT /Q 2) to all orders in the strong coupling αs. When QT ∼ Q, our formula yields the same Drell-Yan cross section as conventional fixed order QCD perturbation theory. We show that resummation is important when the collision energy √ S is large enough and QT ≫ Q, and we argue that perturbative expansions are more stable and reliable in terms of the modified factorization formula. Lepton Pair Production at the LHC and the Gluon Density in the Proton

The production of lepton pairs in hadron collisions h1h2 → γX ; γ → ll̄ proceeds through an intermediate virtual photon via qq̄ → γ, and the subsequent leptonic decay of the virtual photon. Interest in this Drell-Yan process is usually focussed on lepton pairs with large mass Q which justifies the application of perturbative QCD and allows for the extraction of the antiquark density in hadrons [ ...

Intrinsic transverse momentum and transverse spin asymmetries

We investigate leading twist transverse momentum dependent origins of transverse spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions. The chiral-odd T-odd distribution function with intrinsic transverse momentum dependence, which would signal an intrinsic handedness of quarks inside a hadron, could account for single spin asymmetries and at the same time for the large cos 2φ asymmetry in the unpolariz...

Nonperturbative Corrections in Resummed Cross Sections

We show that the resummation of large perturbative corrections in QCD leads to ambiguities in high energy cross sections that are suppressed by powers of large momentum scales. These ambiguities are caused by infrared renormalons, which are a general feature of resummed hard-scattering functions in perturbative QCD, even though these functions are infrared safe order-by-order in perturbation th...

Effects of initial-state QCD interactions in the Drell-Yan process.

We develop a simple, intuitive picture of the effects, in the Drell-Yan process, of initial-state interactions between the projectile and the target. For purposes of illustration, we present specific analyses in terms of a nonrelativistic QED model. However, our principle conclusions are valid in QCD as well. We show that initial-state interactions lead to an increase in the average of the squa...

Absence of Shadowing in Drell-yan Production at Finite Transverse Momentum Exchange

Within a perturbative scalar QED model recently studied by Brodsky et al., we study how leading-twist Coulomb rescatterings affect the Drell-Yan cross section at small x = xtarget, and compare to the case of deep inelastic scattering at small xB . We show that in the range where the transverse momentum transferred to the target is large compared to its minimal value ∼ O (x), Coulomb rescatterin...
